Emmet Centenary Committee, Melbourne, 1903, fob in gold (15ct, 6.82g, 25mm) by Stokes & Sons, to Perpetuate/the Memory/of Ireland's Noblest Patriot/and/Martyr, with scroll mount (C.1903/3). Nearly extremely fine.

Robert Emmet, Irish rebel, born 1778 in Dublin into a Protestant family and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Along with his brother he became invlved with the United Irishmen, an organisation formed in 1791 to achieve Catholic emancipation and, with Protestant co-operation, parliamentary reform. From 1800 - 1802 helived on the continent, where he attempted to enlist French support for an insurrection against Dublin Castle in July 1803. Captured in August of that year Emmet was imprisoned at Kilmainham, tried for treason and hanged on 20 September 1803. This medal was struck by the Emmet Centennary Commitee in Melbourne.
