Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, (trophy of arms type 2), swivelling suspender. 777 Pte T.Stevens 24th Foot. Engraved. Ribbon marked, otherwise toned very fine.
Thomas Stevens, bricklayer, age 22, born at Exeter, Devonshire, England; attested 09Mar1876 at Brecon, Wales; served in South Africa, Gibraltar and India; to L/Cpl 20Jan1877 and Cpl 12Aug1877; confined 13Jan1878, tried and reduced to Pte 19Jan1878; served in 'B' Coy at defence of Rorke's Drift; served in South Wales Borderers from 01Jul1881 but did not trf to regt; Trf to Army Reserve 17Mar1882; recalled to Army Service 02Aug1882; re-trf to Army Reserve 08Feb1883; Disch.16Mar1888 from Army Reserve; entitled to South Africa Medal 1877-79 with clasp '1877-8-9' but named on the 'C' roll incorrectly as Stephens and on the 'Ba' roll correctly.^The Army LS&GC Medal was awarded for 18 years' service so it appears that Thomas Stevens served again between 1888 and 1901.^With research.
