Description

Attica, Athens, silver tetradrachm, (128-127 B.C.) or revised date 96-95 B.C., (16.46 g), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasos, dotted border, rev. owl standing right, head facing on prostrate amphora, to right winged Agon, **A QE across, across and left APO - MO**S*, to left MNO, over **SA/GO/APO* below amphora **PE*, on amphora letter **G*, all within olive wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 1001x, HGC 4, 1602). Bright, off centred obverse, otherwise extremely fine, short on flan weak on the owl's head, a very rare symbol.

Ex Freeman & Sear, Coin auction Sale, February 9, 2002, (lot 10). ^^Type represented in Thompson 'The New Style Coinage of Athens' cf.Thompson 1001. There is a difference of 32 years less between Thompson and the suggested revised chronology. This would make this issue 96-95 B.C.
