Description
USA, World Columbian Exposition, 1892, award medal in bronze (76mm), by Scovill Manufacturing Company, Waterbury, Connecticut, obverse, by Augustus Saint Gaudens, reverse, by C.E.Barber, awarded to Chas. W. Wyllie, with original plush lined, see-both-sides, aluminium case. Edge nick, otherwise good very fine.
Charles William Wyllie (1853-1923) was a prominent British artist painting landscapes and marinescapes. His winning entry in the Exposition was an oil painting titled, 'Davy Jones' Locker' painted in 1890. This is a bit confusing because in the Exposition's Official Catalogue it lists under Oil Paintings for Great Britain No.511 as 'Davy Jones' Locker' by Wyllie, Charles W., London but in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, London it states that it is now the owner of the painting, 'Davy Jones' Locker' by Wyllie, W.L. (William Lionel), who was C.W.Wyllie's brother and also an artist.
