Knight Bachelor document, official George V parchment in the Fifth year of his reign bestowing a Knight Bachelor degree upon Herbert Lethington Maitland Esquire, Bachelor of Medicine, Master of Surgery of Sydney, New South Wales, this large parchment is attached by cords to a circular cast plaster medallion (approx 16cm diameter) featuring the seated King on one side and the standing King in uniform on the opposite side, the plaster medallion in a fitted tin and this fitted in an official case bearing the Royal Arms. Extremely fine.

Sir Herbert Lethington Maitland was a renowned surgeon at Sydney Hospital and medical practitioner. He also lectured nurses and provided clinical surgery lectures. He was later appointed to the board of the hospital. He was knighted in 1915. He was also prominent in many other organisations. During the war years he was a surgeon and temporary Lieutenant-Colonel at the 4th Australian General Hospital at Randwick and did over a thousand repair, grafting and plastic operations. He died on 23 May 1923 and Sydney hospital launched a memorial fund resulting in the establishment of the Maitland Theatre Suite and the Maitland oration established by the hospital's medical alumni.
