Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal, (EVIIR). 238 Pte. W.H.Newland 1st Aus. Inf. Regt. Impressed. Uneven toning on obverse due to double sided tape removal, otherwise extremely fine.

William Henry Newland, stone mason, born 1848 at Sydney, NSW; served 1 Regt NSW Infy, part-time militia and noted as Pte in Oct1873 shooting competition; Enl.18Feb1885 for service in Sudan; Emb.03Mar1885 with C Coy NSW Contingent; attached to Guards Brigade 02Apr1885 then to New Tamai where enemy was contacted then to Tofrik and back to Suakin; to Handub 16Apr1885 and training as Camel Corps; RTA 18May1885 as hostilities ceased; Disch.23June1885 after period of quarantine; awarded Egypt Medal 1882 with clasp Suakin 1885 and Khedive's Star 1884-86; present for Royal Review in Centennial Park 27May1901 and still serving with 1 Regt NSW Infy; noted as a member of Surry United Cricket Club and of the Grand Lodge; Died 14Aug1906 and buried at Rookwood Cemetery.
