Patrick Sexton was a member of the Lismore Half-Squadron from 1896 to 1903. He attended Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebrations in England in 1897 with the NSW Lancer detachment leaving Sydney with the contingent on 10 April 1897 on board SS Ballarat. Sexton did not return on SS Himalaya with the contingent instead visited Ireland and competed at Bisley Rifle Shooting and attended the Crystal Palace Colonial Tournament. He was invited to compete and won places in tent-pegging and lemon cutting events, gaining enough points to be awarded the silver shield for best all-round Colonial. He won further awards for horsemanship after his return. He was promoted to Corporal in 1898 and Sergeant in 1903. He took an active part in the organisation of Lancer tournaments and Balls and Smoke Concerts.
