China, Chun Ah-You, The Chinese Exhibition, undated (1843) 45mm diameter in white metal by Thomas Halliday, Birmingham, obv. Capped and robed bust of Ah-You three-quarters right, rev. legend in 13 lines describing the exhibition, (BHM 2107). Dark patination holed and very rare, about very fine.
Ex Ken O'Brien Collection.
The collection was formed by Nathan Dunn, a China Trade merchant and first exbibited in Philadelphia in a purpose built museum. Chun Ah-You accompanied the exhibition to London in 1841, and was returned to the US following Dunn's death, but was brought back to London for the 1851 Great Exhibition.
Recent high prices have been recorded for better examples of this medal.
