FRANCE, Model 1866 'Chassepot' sword bayonet (blade length 57.5cm), fullered on both sides in rough texture, fluted brass grip, lock fitting for rifle impressed with 'S' or possibly '5', cross guard impressed, 'J 3045', ricasso impressed, '8', back edge of blade with engraved text, usually the name of the arsenal, month and year of manufacture, but illegible except for date, '1869', no scabbard. The blade is extremely sharp, good fine.

Note: Licence to own required in State of Victoria, Australia.
