Lot 1593

Sale 53 · Important Australian Coins & Banknotes

Description

New South Wales, five shilliings or holey dollar, 1813, struck from a Charles IIII Mexico City Mint eight reales dated 1794 (dies B/9-II/1, not listed in Mira/Noble). Well struck countermarks, the H for Henshall weak as usual on this die, the eye of the king visible on the original matrix (coin) thus making this an attractive holey doller, lightly toned good fine, (the countermarks very fine) and rare, especially in this condition.

Bought privately from Spink & Son, London c.1972, and previously unrecorded.
