The Tanjong Pinang was carrying mostly survivors off Pom Pong Island in the Indonesian Archipelago who had previously been shipwrecked when the Singapore evacuation ship, S.S. Kuala, was sunk by Japanese bombers.

Nurse Olga Stringer died 17 February 1942 at the age of 50 and is commemorated at S.S. Tandjong Pinang, civilian war dead.
