'Advice has been received of the death of Pte. R. G. Cobern (Tommy), who was killed in action on July 3 in Borneo. Pte. Cobern was the youngest son of Mr. Rupert and the late Mrs. Eileen Cobern, and grandson of Mrs. E., and the late Sgt. F. A. Claridge. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, Launceston, and before enlisting was employed at the Tasmanian Government Railways.
Pte. Cobern served with the A.I.F. as a gunlayer for the past four years. He was well-known in sporting circles, being a member of the North Esk Rowing Club, and a member of the Launceston Football Club. He was also a prominent badminton player, for which he held many cups. He leaves three sisters and one brother, Sgt. L. Cobern, who has served with the Ninth Division for the past five years.'
