Edward the Elder, (899-924), silver penny, portrait type, Mercia North-Western mint, (1.5 grams), obv. diademed bust to left, around EADVVEARD REX, rev. CVDB ERHT O in two lines, divided by two crosses and central pellet, trefoil of pellets above and below, (S.1084, North 651, same dies as Norweb Part 1 [50]). Extremely fine and rare.
Ex. Captain Douglas Collection (c.1912), R.C. Lockett Collection (Part X), Glendining's April 26-7, 1960, (lot 3658) and J.P. Linzalone Collection Stacks auction December 7, 1994 (lot 2357). This coin is also illustrated in Blunt, Stewart and Lyon 'Coinage in Tenth-century England from Edward the Elder to Edgar's Reform', on plate 4 no.7 (where it is incorrectly attributed to the Norweb petigree.
