Attica, Athens, new style silver tetradrachm, (c.165-48 B.C.), 36mm, (16.81 g), New Style coinage, with the monograms of the names which are uncertain, issue struck 174-173 B.C., (revised to 142-141 B.C.), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing a triple-crested Attic helmet decorated with a Pegasos in flight right above the raised earpiece, rev. owl standing to right, head facing, on amphora, A-**Q*E across, to left monogram **DH-IE/ MH-RW* (magistrates name abreviated across field) to right Macedonian helmet surmounted by a star, **G* on amphora, in field lower left EM, all within an olive wreath. (cf.S.2555, Thompson 209b [This Coin illustrated, p.83, Pl.22], HGC 4, 1602). Toned, struck on a broad flan, slightly off centred on obverse, extremely fine, the only known example.
Ex CNG Triton V Auction Sale January 15, 2002 (lot 1371) from the Robert Schonwalter Collection and indicated by Thompson as coming from commerce in 1959.
