William I, (1066-1087), silver penny, canopy type, Wallingford Mint, issued 1071-1074, moneyer Sweartlinc, (1.22 g), obv. facing draped bust, crowned and diademed within canopy of two columns, +PILLEMII REX around, rev. double quadrilateral with incurved sides, fleury at the angles, annulet in centre within inner circle, +SPEARTLINC ON PII around, (S.1252, N.843, BMC iii). Toned, minor edge loss, nearly extremely fine and rare.
Ex S.J.Green Collection. Previously Spink Auction 15007, lot 943. Possibly from the Carlyon-Britton collection (Spink MNC Nov / Dec 1914, #24822, price ?2). Possibly from the Whitchurch (Oxfordshire) hoard found 1902 or earlier. With tickets.
