Cnut, (1016-1035), silver penny, pointed helmet type, Norwich Mint, issued 1023-1029, moneyer Hwateman, (1.05 g), obv. large draped bust left wearing pointed helmet with single central vertical beaded lines, trefoil-tipped long sceptre before reaching inner circle at tip of helmet, drapery with four horizontal folds and four pellets breaking inner circle, +CNVT RECX around, rev. voided short cross, limbs united at base by two concentric circles with pellet in centre; in each angle, broken annulet enclosing pellet, within inner circle, +HATAMAN ON NOR around, (S.1158, N.787, BMC xiv). Toned, very fine and scarce.
Ex S.J.Green Collection. Previously Dix Noonan Webb Auction 156, lot 193. Also DNW Auction 30, lot 109. Possibly from the Cambridge area hoard discovered c.1993 and dispersed. With tickets.
