Trio to POW: 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. 1909 Pte P.O.Davies. 25/Bn. A.I.F. All medals impressed. The second medal dark toned, otherwise extremely fine.
Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 103 (lot 3854).^^Together with Returned from Active Service badge, numbered 139139 on reverse; copy of statement after repatriation which details harsh treatment as a POW.^^Philip Oswald Davies, miner, age 18, born at Gympie; Enl.25Jun1915 at Brisbane, Queensland with his father's consent; Emb.16Aug1915; TOS of 25Bn at Gallipoli 08Dec1915; arrived in France as part of BEF on 19Mar1916; during the Battle for Pozieres on 29Jul1916 he was taken POW by the Germans and interned at Gefangenenlager, Wahn, Germany; he was at Dulmen POW Camp 04Aug-01Sep1916 and at Katzwinkel via Wissen where he was forced to work in a mine and treated very harshly at the hands of the Germans (he details the cruelty of his captors, including severe beatings, in a statement which is included with the lot); repatriated to England 07Dec1918; RTA 02Mar1919; Disch.21Jun1919.^^With copy of Service File and other research.
