Justin I and Justinian I (A.D. 527), AE follis, Constantinople Mint. issued 4 April - 1 August 527 A.D., (14.82 g), obv. Diademed bust cuirassed with paludamentum of Justin I, to right, around [DN] IVSTIN ET IVSTINIAN [P AVC], rev. Large M, cross above, stars 6 long points to left and right, cross above right, below officinae E, in exergue CON, (S.125, DOC (11aa), W.-, R.-, H.N4 (Vol.I notes E as a hybrid with similar obverse dies, T.-, BNP.-. Fine and excessively rare.
Ex Dr L.J. Sherwin Collection, previously from M.R. Roberts with their ticket ($295). Acquired on 5 May, 2002. ^Clearly an issue as a hybrid of both joint rulers, using a reverse with two stars introduced at the beginning of the reign of Justinian I. The joint rulers using a reverse with one star and cross introduced in the reign of Justin I. This specimen from the similar obverse die as the Hahn illustrated specimen and the example in our sale 127 (lot 4676).^
