Akbar, (A.H. 963-1014, A.D.1556-1605), square Gold mohur, (10.87 grams), struck in Urdu Zafar Qarim mint, issued A.H. 1000 (A.D. 1591-2), Urdu Zafar Qarim mint signature, obv. Kalima, rev. Akbar's name, date and mint signature, (cf.BMC 73-7, cf.Punjab Museum Cat. 124, Nagpur -, Indian Museum Calcutta 101, KM. SAC 119.4). Short on flan on obverse, nearly full on reverse, otherwise very fine, rare.
Ex. Sotheby's London, July 23, 1975 (lot 117). This piece of slightly barbarous style. The issue is known for both heavy and light weight mohurs, heavy weight issues are in BMC (5), Punjab Museum (1) and Lucknow Provincial Museum (2), only a light weight mohur is in the Indian Museum Calcutta. However a similar light weight piece was sold in Spink Taisei 9, (lot 357) which realised US$660. This coinage issue was also copied for use as temple pieces these generally being struck in silver or base metal.
