Gupta Empire, Chandragupta II, (c.A.D. 375-414), gold stater, (7.4 grams), horseman type, BMC Class IV, obv. king riding on horse to right, sashes flying behind him, legend around, around 'Maharajah Chandragupta', rev. goddess Lakshmi seated on wicker stool to left, holding a lotus, leaves and roots behind her, border of dots, Brahmi legend 'Ajita Vikramah', (cf.M.4816-7, Altekar cf.plate XII, 3, cf.BMC 127 [Pl.X, 10] from very similar dies). Has been mounted on edge in several places, porous surface, small dumpy flan, otherwise nearly very fine and very scarce.
