Group of Five to POW: 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. QX17076 L.G.Burnett. All medals impressed. Some irregular toning on last three medals, otherwise extremely fine.
Lionel Granville Burnett, born 05Mar1918 at Leeds, England; Enl.22Jul1940 at Kelvin Grove, Qld; fought in Malaya and Singapore as a Bombardier with 2/10 Field Regt and then taken POW; volunteered to work with A Force comprising allied POWs who worked in Burma on airfield construction and later on the Burma-Thailand railway construction. On completion A Force remained at Tamarkan in Thailand and was sent out to repair bridges damaged by allied bombing, clearing landslides and general maintenance work; later Burnett was sent with other POWs to Petburi, Thailand to help with construction of an airfield near the Indo-Chinese border; after repatriation was Disch.22Jan1946; Died 12Sep2012 at age of 94 and a celebration of his life was held at Walkabout Creek, The Gap, Qld on 24Sep2012; Commemorated at Queensland Garden of Remembrance, Brisbane, Qld.
