He was a lieutenant in the school cadets and he was also junior sailing champion at the Royal Perth Yacht Club and was a member of the Cottesloe Golf Club. The battalion then went to the North African Theatre of Operations where he was a company commander throughout the Siege of Tobruk. After evacuating from Tobruk the battalion was then preparing for battle with Rommel's Afrika Korps. Unfortunately, while on a reconnaissance patrol on 22 October 1942, the day prior to the Battle of El Alamein, Captain Jacoby was shot by a sniper. He was assisted by some of his men but was shot again while being carried to his battalion lines and died a short time later on 30 October at the age of 25. He is buried at the El Alamein War Cemetery in Egypt.
