Awarded DFC: LG 14/11/1944, p5208; CAG 23/11/1944, p2609, with 467 Sqn, for skill and fortitude in operations against the enemy.
Awarded Bar to DFC: LG 4/12/1945, p5898; CAG 20/12/1945, p2715, with 467 Sqn, for attacks on battleships 'Tirpitz' and 'Lutzow'.
John Lyall Sayers, born 21Feb1921 at Brisbane, Qld; Enl.09Nov1941 at Brisbane, Qld; Disch.24May1946 as Flt Lieutenant ex RAF Gamston.
Flt Lt Sayers took part in two attacks against the German battleship 'Tirpitz' including the successful one in November 1944 when she was sunk. He also attacked the battleship 'Lutzow' in April 1945 when that ship was severely damaged. During this attack his aircraft was hit repeatedly by enemy anti-aircraft fire but undeterred he continued his bombing run, which typified his courage and fine fighting spirit.
