MM: CG 27 Aug1917: - 'On March 14th 1917 in the front line system north of GUEDECOURT, Sgt Hornig, whilst in charge of a post of 6 men, displayed great bravery and initiative. His post was heavily shelled and under machine gun fire during the day till almost blown out. Sgt Hornig with great coolness evacuated his men to a safer spot and manned the post himself. After the shelling ceased one of the men returned to the post and found the sergeant wounded in the leg. This action is worthy of recognition for example set to his men.'
