Description
Carausius, (A.D. 287-293), billon antoninianus, Colchester mint (issued 292-3 A.D.), (4.30 g), obv. radiate draped and cuirassed bust of Carausius to right, around IMP C CARAVSIVS P F IN AVG, rev. around P A X AVG G G, Pax standing to left holding vertical sceptre and branch, S P either side, C in exergue, (cf.S.13666, RIC 338 [R2], W.393, cf.C.238). Very fine and very rare.
Triple G on reverse legend refer to Carausius' claim to be a legitimate colleague of Diocletion and Maximian in the rule of the Empire. I N near end on obverse legend is an abreviation of the Latin word Invicto and is very rare on this coin type.
