Description
Australia's Centennial, Melbourne Cup, 1883, in silver (16mm) (C.1883/12a, this piece, with reverse of C.1888/12), by Stokes & Martin, pierced hole at top for suspension, reverse inscribed, 'Tradition'. Some surface sweating, otherwise very fine and very rare.
The 1888 Melbourne Cup was won by Mentor with Tradition second and The Yeoman placed third. After a good start Tradition was first out of the ranks. Going past the judge's box, Spade Guinea was leading Melos, Malua and Tradition, but shortly after broke down, and at the finish Mentor came with a rush and won by a length and a half from Tradition.
