Jubilee of Victoria Exhibition, 1884-85, in silver (30mm) (C.1884-5/1), by Stokes & Martin, reverse inscribed, 'G.Alston'. Toned extremely fine and scarce.
Gilbert Alston of Bulla received his award for heavier vehicles such as spring carts, drays and wagons. The awards for the exhibition were distributed by Sir William Clarke. Gilbert Alston was a native of Peebles in Scotland and arrived in Victoria in 1855. He was an implement manufacturer and spent four years at his trade in Campbellfield and Tullamarine before settling in Bulla. He died on 16 August 1908 and is buried at Bulla Cemetery.
