Trajan, (A.D. 98-117), AE sestertius, issued 107, Rome mint, AE 32, (24.43 g), obv. laureate head with aegis on far shoulder to right of Trajan, around IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V P P, rev. Spes walking to left, holding flower and lifting skirt, around S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI, S C across field, (S.3200, RIC 519, C.459). Well centred, minor roughness, nearly extremely fine, with a dark green patination, very scarce.

Spes was the Goddess of Hope, worshipped as a divinity. She had temples and altars. The flower in her hand, signals the hope of fruit to come.
