Australia, WWI, Volunteered for Active Service, Medically Unfit badge, in silvered, lug back, reverse numbered 4231; Volunteered for Active Service, Required For Home Service badge, in gilt, lug back, reverse numbered 1106 and also inscribed, 'Lieut/Ballantyne/Simpson/29 Inf,/A,R,R,' (Australian Rifle Regiment); Returned from Active Service (AIF) badge, by Stokes & Sons, Melbourne, lug back, reverse numbered 224950. The first two toned, otherwise fine - very fine. (3)
Probably William Ballantyne Simpson, barrister-at-law, born 12Jun1894 at Balmain, Sydney, NSW; commissioned in 1914; 1914-16 served in Australia at HQs, 2Military District; In 1916 while serving with 29th Infantry, Australian Rifles he requested permission to enlist in the ranks of the AIF; Permission was granted and he served as a Driver with 11FCE; Enlisted in 2AIF on 17Jun1940 and by then he held the rank of Lieut-Colonel; In 1942 he relinquished his appointment as Deputy Judge Advocate General but retained temporary rank of Brigadier and appointment of Director General of National Security.
