Trajan Decius, (A.D. 249-251), AE sestertius, issued 249-250, Rome mint, (14.86 g), obv. radiate cuirassed bust to right, IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, rev. Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm, VICTORIA AVG around, S C across field, (S.410, RIC 126d, C.117). Attractive dark green patina, good very fine or better, scarce.
Trajan Decius and his legions marched on Rome and confronted Philip around September 249 AD in Macedonia. Philip was soundly defeated and died in battle. When the news of Decius victory reached Rome, the praetorians immediately murdered Philips young son Philip II. Trajan Decius struck this coin to commemorate his victory.
