Italy, Papal Coinage, Marcellus II (Marcello Cervini), 1555, silver giulio, 28mm, (2.61 g), Ancona mint, obv. MARCELLVS II PONT MAX, papal arms; pellet stops, rev. S PETRVS ANCONA, St. Peter standing facing, holding gospels and keys; pellet stops, (CNI XV 10-11, Muntoni 6-8; Berman 1033). Worn very good - nearly fine, very rare.

The last Pope to retain his birth name upon his accession to the office, Marcellus II also had the sixth shortest pontificate which lasted for only 22 days. The combination of his exhausting ascension ceremonies and pontifical duties quickly fatigued him and he soon fell ill.
