India, Sultans of Bengal, Shams al-din Iltutmish struck in his name as Sultan of Delhi by his governor Ghiyath al-Din 'Iwad. first series (A.H. 614-616, A.D. 1217-1220), silver tanka, mint no name, horseman type, (10.86 g), AH 614 (1217-8 A.D.), (G&G B16 R). Very fine and very rare.

Ex Dr V.J.A. Flynn Collection, coming from Baldwin's London with a ticket priced at £675.

'Iwad' took over as governor of Bengal in AH 609 or 610 He does not appear to strike any coins until AH 614 and then struck coins in the name of his overlord, the sultan of Delhi Iltutmish.
