Description

Attica, Athens, silver tetradrachm, 168-167 B.C., (16.81 g) obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasos, dotted border, rev. Owl standing right, head facing on prostrate amphora, to left a club and bow with case upright, **A QE* across, on left side across API on right side across HPA, in two lines below **STOF* and **BASI/LEI*, on the amphora letter K, below amphora **GL*, all within olive wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 339a [same dies], Sv. Plate 45, 10). Bright, extremely fine and very rare.

Ex Gorny & Mosch, December 11,1994, (lot 1294 part). Type represented in Thompson "The New Style Coinage of Athens" as No.339a [same dies]. Thompson reports 84 known tetradrachms of club, lion's skin, bow in case type from 12 obverse and 56 reverse dies. There is a difference of 32 years between Thompson and the suggested revised chronology. This would make this issue 136-135 B.C.
