Sale 121 · Important Australian, British, World, and Ancient Coins, Banknotes, and Medals

Description

The Bank of Adelaide, one pound, issued at Adelaide, July 5, 1870, (date printed), No. 289992, hand signed by Manager D.W. Cooper and entered by C.H. Powell Acct., with imprint on lower left, 'Bradbury Wilkinson Co, Engravers & c. London', perforated CANCELLED across top to bottom, (Vort-Ronald, p.52-56 on bank, type 2a, cf. Fig.52). Folds and creases, a few crease holes, with heavy aging tone, otherwise nearly fine, very rare and one of the earliest known notes of this bank.

Ex Noble Numism,atics Sale 71 (lot 2922).

This issue of The Bank of Adelaide (1865-1980, merging to be absorbed with the ANZ in 1980), is of much interest, particularly as its notes tended to remain in South Australia, and consequently few of the one pound notes seem to have survived.
