William Lowrie was an agricultural educationalist. He reported fruitlessly to the Victorian government on various aspects of this subject but he was continually hampered by a succession of ministers who, according to a journalist of the time, 'scarcely knew the difference between a nanny goat and a Hereford bull'. With much disappointment he left Victoria during 1901 and headed to New Zealand as director of Canterbury Agricultural College (later Lincoln College).
