Australia, George Francis Twohill appointment certificate as an officer of the Permanent Military Forces from fifth day of August 1942 at the rank of Lieutenant, signed by the Governor-General, Alexander Gore Arkwright, Baron Gowrie; Australian Military Forces, Certificate of Discharge No.267593 for NX24346 Lieutenant George Francis Twohill, HQ 6 Aust Division, dated 6 Dec 45; The Royal Humane Society of Australasia Silver Medal Certificate, dated Eighteenth day of February 1946, awarded to G.F.Twohill, Sydney (N.S.W.), Accountant (Lieut. A.I.F.) aged 31 years, in rescuing Major-General J.E.S.Stevens, From drowning in the sea at Lae, New Guinea, on Aug.2, 1945. Fine - very fine. (3)
Lieut Twohill was awarded a Mention in Despatches at war's end.
The rescue for which Lieut Twohill received the RHS of Australasia Silver Medal occurred after a plane carrying passengers including two AIF divisional commanders, Maj-Gen J.E.S.Stevens and Maj-Gen H.C.H.Robertson crashed into the sea at night on 2 August 1945 when flying between Wewak and Lae. Lieut. G.F.Twohill was Aide-de-Camp to Maj-Gen Stevens.
