Pair to Light Horse at Beersheba: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. 2125 Pte. H.J.H.Hays. 12-L.H.R. A.I.F. Both medals impressed but second medal renamed. Display mounted, very fine.
Herbert John Hawkins Hays, fitter at Sulphide Corporation, Newcastle, NSW, age 28, born at Wickham, Newcastle,NSW; Enl.13Dec1916 at RAS Showground, Sydney, NSW in 7 Rft 2&4 Camel Regt; Emb.03Feb1917; TOS 4LHR 11Mar1917; TOS C Sqn 12LHR 13May1917; to hospital ill 30May1917; rejoined unit 13Jun1917; to rest camp at Port Said 28Aug1917; rejoined unit 07Sep1917; to 4th Trg Regt 29Jan1918; rejoined unit 03Feb1918; various hospital and rest camp stays; RTA 07Apr1919; Disch.17May1919; Died at Royal Newcastle Hospital in November 1951 and after a service at Sacred Heart Church, Hamilton, was buried at the Catholic Cemetery, Sandgate.
