Description

Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 3 reverse). 3245 Tpr: G.Cliff. N.S.Wales I.B. Impressed. Very fine.

George Cliff, 3rd NSW Imperial Bushmen; formed at Klerksdorp, Transvaal 04May1901 from men intended for other units with more men added later; Invalided to Australia 06Feb1902.

In one section of a letter home to his brother, George Cliff, dated Nov 22, 1901, he wrote, 'I have now left the blockhouse, and I am again with Colonel Williams' column, and we are ordered to go the other side of Pretoria. I would sooner be with my regiment than in the blockhouse. Our column is still bringing in more Boer prisoners. A few days ago we had a brush with them, and took 54 Boers and 36 waggons (sic), also a lot of cattle and sheep. We killed four Boers. Not one of our chaps got hit. It is nearly always raining here now, and it is not very nice to trek along wet through, and lie down at night in your wet clothes, but it must be done. The fever is very bad over here at present.'
