Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 3 reverse), - three clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal.67 Tpr: W.J.Johnson. W. Australian I.B. Impressed. Some light hairlines, otherwise good extremely fine.
William Joseph Johnson, drover, age 30, born at South Australia, residing at Leonora, WA and working on the goldfields (the enlistees were nicknamed by one newspaper as 'The Debt Dodging Corps', preferring to face Boer bullets to bum-bailiffs (debt collectors), enlisted in 4th Western Australian Mounted Infantry (Imperial Bushmen); Emb.08May1900; contingent comprised 7 officers and 120 other ranks; RTA 05Jul1900; Arrived at Albany, WA 20Jul1900 and unit disbanded 14Aug1900.
