Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 2 reverse with faint ghost dates), - eight clasps - Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. 245 S-.Gt M. S.C.Barnes Australian Horse. Engraved alteration to rank, otherwise impressed. Nicely toned, a few small surface marks, otherwise extremely fine.

Sydney Charles Barnes, clerk, born 19Jun1875 at Cootamundra, NSW; joined 1st Australian Horse when it was raised in 1897 comprising mostly young bushmen, many of whom were farmer's sons; Sgt then promoted to Staff Sgt Major 17Feb1900; RTA on Orient 08Jan1901; served on second occasion as a L/Cpl in 2nd NSW Mounted Rifles.

Together with research including history of the 1st Australian Horse, unit medal rolls and a photo of 1st Contingent of this unit (includes 30 of 32 members).
