Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 2 reverse), - five clasps - Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, attached at the top of the ribbon is a plaque inscribed, 'DEFENCE OF/ELANDS RIVER/AUGUST 1900'.295. Tpr G.Sutherland. C.B.C. Impressed. Hairlines, otherwise good very fine.

Unit medal roll indicates entitlement to additional clasps for Johannesburg and Relief of Mafeking.

The Siege of Eland's River, 4 to 16 August 1900 was one of the fiercest battles fought during the Anglo-Boer War when a very strong force of Boers under the command of General J.H. De La Rey surrounded a much smaller force of mainly Australian and Rhodesian soldiers who courageously defended the garrison and withstood the siege.
