Description
Advertising token, created on a shaved down halfpenny (7.25g), obverse inscribed in running script, 'Edwd/Johnston/Cock founder/Baldwin's/Garden's/Nr 58', reverse plain except for faint outline of a King's bust right. Very fine.
The word 'cock' here refers to a stopcock, a valve fitted to pipework and used to control the flow of water, gas or steam. Baldwin's Gardens is a street located close to Chancery Lane underground station in London, and runs between Grays' Inn Road and Leather Lane in Camden, London. From the time the Baldwin's Gardens street opened until St Albans Church was built alongside it in the 1860s, the area was a notorious slum and much frequented by criminals.
