Description

Abul Mudhafer Yusuf al Mustanjid, (A.H. 555-566) (A.D. 1160-1170), gold dinar, Madinat al Salam mint (Baghdad), A.H. 560 = A.D. 1165, with additional field inscriptions including the Caliphs full name, (A.266, cf.Lavoix 1271, Ruler not in BMC). Crinkled, weak in places, otherwise very fine and an excessively rare ruler.

The first Caliph of these Later Abbasids is excessively rare and only known from a few specimens. The Later Abbasids enjoyed a transient return of restricted temporal authority during the decades preceeding Mongol occupation. Coins were struck at Baghdad by the Caliphs from al Mustanjid (A.H. 555-566) to al-Musta'sim (A.H. 640-656).
