Description
al-Walid I (A.H. 86-96) (A.D. 705-715), gold third dinar, no mint but Western type legend, (probably from North African or Spanish mint), A.H. 92 = A.D. 710-711, obv. 'no god but Allah' Marginal inscription from Qur.IX,33, rev. 'In the name of Allah, the merciful, the compassionate', around 'This third (dinar) was struck in the year 2 and ninety', (cf.A.127, cf.M.42, BMC -, W. UM2 [p.89]). With minor graffiti in field, good very fine and very rare.
Ex. Superior Auctions, March 1971, Pradeau Sale II, (lot 2379). $$ These fractional gold dinars are all rare, they occur for some years from A.H.91-103. Because of the use of the Western type legend they have been assigned to a mint by walker as issuing in North Africa or Spain. The year 92 is much rarer and is only known from the published example by Miles from the University Museum, Philadelphia (No.47).
