Description
Queensland Government, Brisbane, one pound, 1st July 1897, A/1 825796 (MVR 1). Limp paper, many folds and creases, otherwise fine and extremely rare.
After the financial disasters of the 1890s the Queensland Government had to issue its own superscribed notes to meet the urgent necessity to provide currency acceptable to the public. After 1893 the Queensland Government decided to continue to issue its own notes. This example is the noted specimen by Vort-Ronald, the issue had limited circulation and continued until 1910 and remained the only notes in pre-Federation Australia issued (and backed) by a State Government.
