At the Military Tournament held on 20 June 1887 at the Agricultural Society's Show Ground at Flemington, Victoria, Scotch College Cadet Unit won the cadet bayonet exercise competition with Church of England Grammar School second.

In 1901 Mr John Pierce, merchant of High Street, Bendigo donated a silver shield for competition among the cadet detachments of Bendigo and Eaglehawk, the first such local gift to cadets of the district. Each school was to enter two teams of six cadets each with shooting commencing in September and conducted weekly until Christmas. The shield had to be won in three consecutive years before it became their property. In the final of the 1901 competition, Gravel Hill A Team defeated St Andrew's College Bendigo A Team.
