Description

Group of Four: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. Chaplain A.H.Gallop. A.I.F. on first two medals, N429574 A.H.Gallop on last two medals. All medals impressed, the first two medals renamed official replacements. Good very fine.

Together with a pair of Christian Chaplains Dept collar badges 1912-18.

Alfred Henry Gallop of Woollahra, Sydney, NSW supplied a statutory declaration to Base Records AIF, Victoria Barracks, Melbourne on 7 May 1932 in which he stated that his British War Medal, Victory Medal and Returned Soldier's badge were lost on 31 July 1925 at Jamberoo, NSW when the Rectory in which he lived and all its contents were accidentally and totally destroyed by fire. Subsequently replacements were issued by registered mail and he acknowledged receipt of same at Woollahra on 23 May 1932.

In 1915 Rev. A.H.Gallop was the curate of St Stephen's Newtown and then transferred to Christ Church at Kiama as 'locum tenens' for the Rector Rev. H.M.A.Pearce. In 1916 when he departed to serve as Chaplain with the AIF a gathering was held in his honour and he was presented with a gold double faced wristlet watch and a fine pocket camera by Major Honey on behalf of the congregation.

In 1925 when his service medals were destroyed by fire at Jamberoo, it was reported that the church rectory was totally destroyed by fire in 20 minutes and that Rev Gallop and his wife and child were in bed at the time the fire started and barely escaped with their lives.
