Description

Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, (William IV with Hanoverian arms), with ribbon buckle bar. J.Skene, Q.Master Serjt. 63rd Regiment Foot. 1833. Impressed. Several scratches across Skene on naming area, otherwise nicely toned, very fine.

The 63rd Foot (West Suffolk) Regiment served in Australia in New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia. In an unpublished manuscript titled The 63rd Regiment of Foot (West Suffolk) In Australia 1829-1833 by Dr Edward D.H.Flack (a work in progress), he shows the unit deployment on 25 March 1830 when the HQs of 63rd Regiment arrived at Hobart Town in Tasmania. Here he records QMSjt James Kene. Perhaps that is why the scratching is on the medal because the recipient was unhappy that his name has been impressed incorrectly as J.Skene on the medal, or has the author mis-read records and recorded the name incorrectly?
