Gordian III, (A.D. 238-244), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 241-2 (30.7 g), obv. laureate draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, around IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, rev. around P M TR P IIII COS II P P, SC in exergue, Apollo seated to left holding branch and resting left elbow on lyre, (cf.S.8732, RIC 302, cf.C.251). On a very heavy flan of medallic size, with a light brown patina, otherwise nearly very fine and a scarce reverse type.

Ex Dr. V.J.A. Flynn Collection and previously from Noble Numismatics Sale 105 (lot 4268) and from the Cornelius C. Vermeule III Collection, sold in Triton III (lot 1722 part) for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with his ticket.
