Description

Achaean League, hemidrachm, Aegira mint, (c.160-150 B.C.), mint mark fore part of goat. (cf.S.2971, Clerk 16). Very fine, scarce.

This and the following group of Achaean League issues for different cities are all similar in type by having an obverse of Zeus laureate head to right, and a reverse of a large AX monogram, all which is within a wreath. Any additional letters or symbols are indicated in the description in each lot. All these coins come from the Diakofto Hoard (ICGH 262), (on the coast approximately 20 klms. east of Aegium, Achaea). The hoard was found in 1965 and buried about 146 B.C. All the coins from this hoard have been recorded and are on file with the British Museum.
